Red Riding Hood

I was feeling whimsical the day I painted this. Slapped some paint around just to see what pictures would form in my mind. Stencilled brush strokes off some random card, spread colour around the paper. Somehow Little Red Riding Hood’s forest came to my mind and this painting came to be.

It’s one of the stories that my children like a lot. For some reason, the idea of a big bad wolf swallowing both grandma AND the little girl seems to tickle their fancy greatly. I read this story to them at least once a week, sometimes more. It’s always on their request list.

A bit of random doodling never hurts to add interest to the overall composition!! And so much more liberating!

I was very pleased with how this piece turned out. The bright reddish pink background contrasting with the greens and blues of the tree trunks somehow makes for a very harmonious picture. I know there’s all sorts of theories around about complementary colours etc, but I paint for fun, so academic ideas around art make my head hurt. Splash paint around already!

Anyway, Little Red Riding Hood has turned out beaut, and will soon go and live in someone else’s home.

Happy New Year!
