Roadtrip with Pa

One of those fun pieces that I would never have thought of, except as a commission. I’m not one usually for cars. But this particular client wanted a piece with a vintage car, just like the one owned by a dear one. No other particular brief, except that the background had to project a sense of happiness and whimsy.

I had to have a careful look at the photo she sent me of the car.  What else to do with a car except to place it carefully on a road? But not just any road, it’s got to be a road on a bridge with arches. Way cool.

And just because, I felt like adding my favourite black and white dog motif, some birds, and for the first time in my artwork, a few zebra fish.

I found some art inspiration from artists such as Jane Filer and Gordon Hopkins, and decided to channel them.

It’s always a bit of a miracle to me how a painting starts out looking “eewww”. Then as colours get layered on, shapes defined, fine details added to balance out large shapes, contrasting colours applied to relieve monotone, suddenly something rather pleasing emerges at the end. It’s a really hard to start a piece, but once I get going, the momentum rolls along.

Needless to say, I am happy with this one. And therefore proud to show it.
