This is a scene from one of my favourite danmei novels. I first saw a black and white illustration of this key scene in the English edition of the book on social media. I read the Chinese editions, which sadly doesn’t have these lovely tantalising pictures.
So I decided I had to paint my own version of this important scene, inspired by the original artist’s work.
This story is incredibly long. My edition has 9 volumes, although the final volume is mainly made up of extra chapters, expanding on certain characters.
It’s one of the few stories that left me quite heartbroken in places. The author seems determined to put as much angst as possible into the storyline, and as the story draws to a close, situations avalanche exponentially. Maybe a few too many twists for my liking.
It’s a storyline that probably deserves a second or even third reading.
